Catalogue Note
The ascetic — the forest-dwelling holy man — appears throughout the narrative reliefs of Gandhāra, lean and bearded, often in conversation with the Buddha. This head gives him the type’s long, combed beard and swept-back hair, the face slightly turned.
The lightest of the heads, at 1.8 kilograms, and narrow in profile.
