Catalogue Note
Gandhāra gave the Buddha one of his earliest human faces, and it did so in a Hellenistic idiom: the straight nose continuing the line of the brow, the heavy-lidded eyes, and hair rendered in the soft, wave-like locks of Greek sculpture rather than the tight curls that became standard further east. This head is made in that manner.
The expression is inward and entirely still. Lit from one side, the waves of the hair and the long upper lids carry most of the modelling; lit from the front it goes flat, so it rewards a lamp placed a little above and to the left.
