Catalogue Note
The largest head in the collection, and the most decorative. The headdress is built up in tiers — a patterned band across the brow, rolled pieces over the ears, and a round rosette at the crown — framing a broad, youthful face with a faint smile.
Figures of this kind, princely attendants and donors, crowd the narrative reliefs of Gandhāran stupas. Made at this scale it reads from across a room, and it wants a solid support: it weighs five and a half kilograms on its stand.
